History:
Cervical Spine Infection Treatment in Pune was sought by a patient who had previously undergone anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery in September 2023 to relieve severe neck pain. While the surgery initially provided significant pain relief, symptoms began to worsen just 20 days post-operation. Gradually, the patient developed progressive weakness in both upper and lower limbs, which rapidly advanced to complete paralysis within eight days. Before becoming bedridden, the patient also reported balance issues while walking. Examination Findings:
- Upper Limbs: Complete loss of grip strength, finger abduction, and wrist/elbow/shoulder movements. Deep tendon reflexes were brisk.
- Lower Limbs: Complete loss of muscle strength. Deep tendon reflexes were brisk, and the plantar reflex was extensor.
Diagnosis:
Cervical 5 and 6 infective spondylodiscitis ie infection of the vertebral bone by a bacterial infection of the discs between the vertebrae. The infecting organism was identified as Escherichia coli (E. coli).
Treatment:
- It was planned to removal of existing hardware from the neck, thorough cleaning of the infected area, Extension of the surgical implant.
