Mrs.Pawar Journey: From 8 Years of Back Pain to a Pain-Free Life

Patient History

Mrs. Pawar, 57 years old, had been suffering from severe back pain for more than eight years. The pain spread to her right leg, caused tingling in her toe, and made it hard for her to walk or even turn in bed. A recent fall made her condition worse. An MRI scan showed a disc bulge, slipped disc, narrowing of the spinal canal, and pressure on the nerves.

Before Surgery

Despite trying medicines and rest, her pain continued to increase. She was unable to walk properly, lost sleep due to severe discomfort, and needed help even for simple daily tasks. Living with back pain and sciatica had made her life stressful and restricted. At this stage, she consulted Dr. Sangram Rajale, Spine Surgeon in Pune, for expert advice.

MRI Findings

▪️ Disc bulge at L3-L4
▪️ Diffuse disc bulge with central protrusion at L4-L5
▪️ Canal stenosis due to ligament thickening and joint changes
▪️ Nerve root compression: Bilateral L5 and Right L4

After Surgey

She underwent endoscopic spine surgery in Pune that included L4-L5 laminectomy and discectomy. Recovery was quick — within a day she could sit comfortably, and by the third day she started walking with support. By discharge, she was free from pain and walking independently. At follow-up, she was fully active, able to walk 3 km daily, and no longer needed medicines or physiotherapy.

Post-Surgery Recovery

After the surgery, Mrs. Pawar experienced an amazing recovery:

  • Within 24 hours, she could sit and turn in bed without pain for the first time in weeks.

  • By the third day, she was able to walk with support, and her leg pain had reduced a lot.

  • Tingling and numbness in her right foot started to improve, showing that the nerves were relieved.

By the fourth day, at the time of discharge:

  • She was walking on her own
  • Sensation had improved in the L4-L5-S1 areas
  • She had no back pain or sciatica
  • Her bladder control and sleep returned to normal
